Tasmanians benefiting from Technology Training Programmes

OAK Technology and Learning is taking its training to the Huon Valley, to give more people the chance to become qualified in digital media and technology.

Funded by Skills Tasmania and run in conjunction with Huon Linc and the Information Network Centre, the training is aimed at a wide range of people including students, those living with a disability, the unemployed, people re-entering the workforce or those just wanting to build on their technology skills.

Both courses are being held at the at the Huon Linc at Huonville and the Wayraparattee Child and Family Centre at Geeveston and offer participants the opportunity to gain qualifications in Certificate I in Information, Digital Media and Technology and selected units from Certificate II in Information, Digital Media and Technology.

OAK Technology and Learning Manager Graeme Finlayson said the courses were set up in the Huon Valley to help address some of the barriers to rural education, such as distance and transport issues.

While the courses were mainly aimed at improving people’s employment prospects and technology skills, Graeme said the training was also a great source of self confidence and social networking for participants.

“There’s a fair few people who either know each other in both areas (Huonville and Geeveston) or are making new links and friendships which is just great,” he said.

The two certificates include training in areas such as operating a personal computer, word processing applications, using web browsers and email, maintaining technology equipment, capturing a digital image, designing documents and using computer packages.

While the Huon Valley technology training was a first for OAK Technology & Learning, Graeme said he would like to see a continuation of the cooperation between OAK Tasmania and LINC Tasmania in the future, to bring more technology training to regional areas of the State.

iPads offer engaging learning experience

4th November 2011 | Posted in OAK Technology & Learning

Literacy and Numeracy training has become a whole lot more exciting, thanks to the purchase of several Apple iPads by OAK Tasmania.

Made possible through funding from Skills Tasmania, the iPads are the main tool being used to deliver a new literacy and training pilot component to participants in OAK Youth Pathways – a dedicated transition to employment program.

The Youth Pathways program helps develop the work, life and employment skills of 18 to 25 year-olds living with a disability. The new component focuses on some of the gaps and difficulties these young people face in literacy and numeracy. In the long-term it is hoped the training will further enhance their employment and education opportunities.

Training Coordinator Michele Foley praised the pilot program and the use of the iPads. She said iPads were well suited to people with a range of disabilities.

“There are lots of different learning applications we are implementing with them,” Michele said.

“It’s far better because it’s far more active learning than sitting in front of a computer.”

“It’s also easier than using a computer with all the different hardware, mice and keyboards.”

Michele said the mobility of the iPads was also great as it enabled students to take their learning out of the classroom and into the community for a range of lessons, such as map reading.

However by far the best thing about the tablet computers was the way they made lessons more engaging.

“It’s been really good the enthusiasm the guys have had, they are so keen” she said.

“They are actually getting out in the community using this amazing technology but they are actually learning a lot which is a more engaging learning experience.”

New program to improve literacy & numeracy skills

30th May 2011 | Posted in OAK Technology & Learning

Young Tasmanians living with disability will be able to improve their numeracy and literacy skills and achieve a greater degree of success in attaining certificate level qualifications, thanks to a program developed by staff at OAK Technology & Learning.

A successful $30,000 grant application to Skills Tasmania will see OAK Tasmania develop literacy and numeracy learning units and design learning, evaluation and reporting tools with the assistance of an Adult Literacy Support Officer. Once completed, these modules will form a suite of new resources that will help identify new skills development activities and training and learning programs for participants who are enrolled in OAK Youth Pathways – a program that helps young adults transition into further education and employment.
