Training + work experience = employability

OAK Youth Pathways has been working with four young men who are looking to increase their employability skills. The young men have spent two days at OAK Tasmania’s Grove Heritage Nursery where they learnt how to select and pick apples from the nursery’s extensive orchards.

The group were taught a range of skills that are immediately transferrable to employment in the fruit picking industry, but could just as well be applied to any industry. The young men learnt the importance of occupational, health and safety practices; how to stay on task; and how to work together in a small team.

The freshly picked apples were brought back to Hobart and distributed to OAK Tasmania’s supported employees, clients and staff. Judging by the way the apples were received, the group might need to plan another trip to the nursery to keep up with demand!
