The theme of the Conference this year was “I work, I live” – with the awareness that there were around 600 million people with disabilities around the world who are in need of employment opportunities. The Conference was opened by Toru Toida, Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare, who spoke about the promotion of a ‘barrier free society’ and the fact that the UN Convention on people with disabilities was adopted by the Japanese Parliament in 2007. This Convention, known as C159, referred to people with disabilities securing, retaining and advancing in suitable employment and therefore enabling better integration into mainstream society. More. Divisional Manager of Oakdale Industries, John Hollis, was recently awarded the title of Vanguard by the Australian Timber Flooring Association (ATFA), at its Annual Convention held in Melbourne in October. At ATFA’s Annual Dinner, the culmination to this year’s highly successful Convention, John was awarded the title in front of 180 industry leaders from around the country. More.

‘High Commendation’ for Technology Learning Manager
Manager of Oak Tasmania’s Technology Learning Centre, Mr Graeme Finlayson, has been highly commended for his work as part of the inaugural Alex Tubb Young Worker Award – a joint project by National Disability Services (NDS) Tasmania and the Australasian Society for the Study of Intellectual Disability (ASSID) recognising outstanding leadership by workers in the Tasmanian Disability sector. ASSID Jim Woodworth Memorial Student Award 2008
The annual Australasian Society for the Study of Intellectual Disability (ASSID) Jim Woodworth Memorial Student Award for 2008 has been won by a Launceston-based disability client coordinator. Ms Maria Campbell was presented with the coveted award, and a cheque for $1000 from Oak Tasmania, at the ‘Celebrating Support Workers’ Conference in October. |
