New IT Programs a win for Glenorchy Residents

A successful grant application to the Tasmanian Community Fund by Oak Tasmania’s Technology Learning Centre (TLC) will see the implementation of much-needed programs for residents and students in the Glenorchy area.

The grant, totalling $55,000 will fund the Connect-ability Program and a program to engage students ‘at risk’ of disengaging from school. Both programs will be run from TLC’s existing Eady Street premises.  The grant will enable the purchase of new equipment and fund a paid Project Management position to oversee the running of the programs. The centre will also extend its’ operating hours.

The project for ‘at risk’ students is a partnership between local high schools, the successful youth restorative program Chance on Main, and the Technology Learning Centre. The aim of the project is to work collaboratively with up to 25 students to increase their IT knowledge and skills which will increase the potential for them to continue further education and training. The outcomes will provide lasting positive benefits for participants and the community.

The other project, known as Connect-ability, will provide computer access to the residents of Glenorchy for a minimal fee – much like an internet cafe. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Glenorchy has some of the lowest rates of computer ownership and internet access in Tasmania.

“The grant from the Tasmanian Community Fund and the purchase of four replacement computers by Oak Tasmania will provide an additional 560 hours of computer access per week for residents and students of Glenorchy,” says TLC Manager Graeme Finlayson.

“Between the hours of 8.30am and 4.00pm weekdays, there will be five dedicated computers for students and public access. After 4.00pm weekdays, there will be 15 computers available at the centre for public access.”
Mr Finlayson says the technology upgrade also includes a new server, printer and ancillary equipment ‘that will help take the strain away from the Glenorchy Online Access Centre.’

Oak Tasmania’s Technology Learning Centre provides people with a supportive environment in which to learn about new technologies, and participate in nationally recognised Certificates in Information Technology. TLC also offers a Transition to Employment service and a respite service.
